The Balika Project

In the year 2019-2020, the Veerni Project started its second unit of an educational facility for 20 girls so that they could follow the secondary school curriculum in a safe and supportive environment. The Veerni Balika program was started because of the success of the Veerni Institute. Over the years, the Veerni Project has created a demand, particularly from the poorer and lower caste communities, for the education of their daughters. To fulfil the parents' demand, the Veerni Project started the Veerni Balika Program in the year 2019-2021 with 20 girls.
Underprivileged rural girls in India have little or no access to education, basic health services, or even the right to negotiate their own relationships with their families. These girls and women need a voice, a support network for their hopes, dreams, and ambitions.
The Balika Project is to give an opportunity to rural deprived girls, through the Veerni Institute Program, to continue their study in order to achieve a high level of education. Living and growing together in a safe and well organized environment will support our mission to empower girls and women, build their self-esteem, foster independence and create unity.

To educate rural adolescent girls from the Thardesert in Rajasthan, one of the most deprived regions of the world from families either on or below the poverty line irrespective of castes.

Mission Statement of the Veerni Balika Project

The Veerni Balika Project, wants continue to provide to 20 girls from the rural areas of Jodhpur district, who are at least 10 years old and that have already passed the 5 grade at school, the possibility to continue their study in a safe and well organized environment, up to the 12 grade.

From 2019, the program has been providing a boarding school, where the girls live during the whole year, weekends included. Studying and living together at school, as well as the Veerni Balika is a good opportunity for their personal development. Through classes and workshops the girls are encouraged to speak their mind, to discuss their personal and family relationship issues and to find solutions.

The 20 girls have educated on various topics of general education including women’s rights, health, and nutrition. It is our intention to collaborate with a doctor and full time nurse, who have been monitoring girls’ health situation.

The overarching goal of the Veerni Balika Project is to provide underprivileged girls with the educational, vocational and social skills to help them to become confident and, over the years, financially supportive members within their families and community.

For Veerni, empowerment means enabling women to recognize the potential, possibilities and alternatives that exist in their lives and giving them the resources with which they can pursue their goals. To this end, we are already running one program called the Veerni Institute on the same line with 90 girls, who are receiving education with the Veerni Project.

There are 20 girls enrolled at The Veerni Balika Program. The girls range in age from the 6 to the 12 academic grades. They represent a wide spectrum of caste and social groups, and they come from many villages in the area surrounding Jodhpur. While living at the Veerni Balika they study in one of two fine local private school, In addition, they attend art and sports programs and receive computer training. Several of our graduates attend college.

The Veerni Project provides the girls with a safe and supportive living environment while they are studying. They are provided with nutritiousfood; guidance with their studies, health care, and a loving and encouraging social environment. They celebrate together personal milestones and national holidays, and the girls learn from each other and from the staff the value of openness to people of many different backgrounds. Our aim is to help them become educated, confident, and strong young women equipped for the changing world they will soon confront.

The Veerni Project supports the girls through a variety of academic and extra curricular activities designed to provide the education, skills, and health and wellness required to pursue a productive life in the modern world.

Academics

During the school day, the girls at the centre follows the secondary school curriculum at two private, co-educational schools nearby that are well regarded for their high academic standards. The girls have the choice of studying three different academic streams: Science, Commerce or Humanities. Thanks to the additional support given to them in the after-school tutoring program at the Veerni Balika, the girls have met with success integrating academically into these more challenging urban schools. The broader academic offerings they can study at Veerni are a stark contrast to the narrow Arts curriculum available to those girls who are fortunate enough to attend a rural secondary school.

Out of School Activities

After the school day, Veerni offers several other activities to support learning, skill development, health and wellness. These include :

Tutoring Classes
Girls can receive additional help with their school work. A former Veerni student, and university graduate, runs tutoring sessions for the younger girls to ensure that they pass their exams; this is often a condition of the parents to allow their daughters to stay at the Institute. Tutoring is primarily in mathematics and science, as well as in English.
Computer Academy
Veerni provides a daily 2 hour computer training session run by a local teacher. The computer training program is currently being upgraded to insure that our students graduate with high proficiency in their computer skills.
Sports
Veerni strongly believes in the value of physical exercise and organized sports as a core component of every girl’s education and wellbeing. The girls attend sports programs such as handball and track at a local park. Yoga classes are conducted at the Institute.
Health Care and Education
All girls receive a health exam upon arrival, and are often treated for anemia, a common problem among Indian girls due to poor nutrition, and general neglect. The Veerni nurse in residence provides weekly sessions on hygiene.
Arts and Vocational Skill Development
Art Programs and Sewing Classes are conducted regularly at the Institute. This is part of an arts and crafts program that the girls enjoy.
Long Term Goals
A permanent housing facility for the institute that can serve a larger number of more girls with an adjoining computer centre.
